Hi, my name is Sam Krolikowski. I attended YMCA Santa Maria Outdoor Adventure Camp July 28 to August 3, 2019 in Bailey, Colorado. There were nine kids in my group, it was called the OAC group (outdoor adventure camp). My counselors were from Austrailia and South Africa. We hiked up into the mountains from Tuesday until Thursday to a forest of aspens called Aspen Grove. Since I’m from Nebraska I am not used to the cold nights up in the mountains, and it's also not humid at all. My counselors said the nice thing about OAC is that we didn't have a schedule or a place to be at a certain time like traditional camp so we could swim in the pool or go kayaking or canoeing in the lake any time we wanted. There was also this thing called ceiesta, a time where we could grab a mattress pad and nap wherever we wanted to.
What I imagined the camp to be like was pretty different from what it was like. I didn't expect it to have a Jesus statue or a swimming pool. I’d say that my favorite part was hiking up and down the mountain to see the Jesus statue. There were two types of sleeping conditions at camp one was a big white tent with bunk bed cots in it to fit the campers and counselors, and the other was up at a place called Aspen Grove where we slept out in the open. For meals up in the mountains at Aspen Grove, we had oatmeal in the morning for breakfast and different meals during the day like sandwiches and quesadillas for dinner. A typical day we would play a game with a haky sack called pelt, hike, and talk.Skills I learned were how to purify water, packing up a mountain with big packs, rock climbing and learning to open up to people more. I enjoyed my time at YMCA Camp Santa Maria.
